Zero-Cost AI Model Routing: Dynamic Decision Trees in the Agent Loop

"How embedding a tiny runtime decision-tree selector eliminates overspending on frontier models for deterministic reasoning tasks."

Zero-Cost AI Model Routing: Dynamic Decision Trees in the Agent Loop

The prevailing assumption in enterprise AI is that every user prompt or agent step demands the most expensive frontier model. The telemetry from our production pipelines shows a drastically different reality: over 70% of subagent queries are deterministic classifications, formatting requests, or syntactic checks.

By placing a lightweight proxy daemon in front of our agent loops, we inspect prompt complexity, token count, and required reasoning depth before dispatching. Simple tasks route to local ARM64 models or blazing-fast Groq endpoints, while frontier models are reserved strictly for complex multi-turn logic.

The result? Up to 80% reduction in API token invoices with zero noticeable loss in agent accuracy or pipeline velocity.
